Science Communication and Popularization

Why Popularisation of Science

In a world dominated by Science and technology, science communication and popularisation is of utmost importance especially for our country where a large population needs to be told about the impact of science and technology in their  daily lives.

   Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam

There is a general consensus that the 19th and 20th centuries saw the greatest amount of science popularisation in history. However scholars seldom agree on what is meant by science popularization. If this is an accurate description, how can this be so? There seem to be two broad meanings of science popularization.

bullet

One is the process of elite or specialist science diffusing to a broader population.

bullet

The other general meaning of popularization is the change amongst the population and in public culture which makes science of use or of interest.

That is one way of looking at science popularization may be from the top down, and the other from the bottom up. This dichotomy is well captured in Rajasthan State. With the focal theme based on scientific activities the Children Science Congress is organised in the state every year. Action and activities are the key elements which National Children Science Congress aims to gets involved in for "Learning by doing".

It would involve the use of scientific methodology. The knowledge and principles of science to be used in carrying out the activity/project is essential. Any eligible child intending to participate in the children science congress would be able to take part only if he/she is presenting a project report after carrying out the activity based on focal theme selected for the year.

Children of age group 10-17 can participate in CSC.

Children have to present a project report after carrying out the activity by using scientific methodology on the focal theme of the year. In state, CSC is organised in three stages.
