Science Communication and Popularization
Why Popularisation of ScienceIn a world dominated by Science and technology, science communication and popularisation is of utmost importance especially for our country where a large population needs to be told about the impact of science and technology in their daily lives.
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam
There is a general consensus that the 19th and 20th centuries saw the greatest amount of science popularisation in history. However scholars seldom agree on what is meant by science popularization. If this is an accurate description, how can this be so? There seem to be two broad meanings of science popularization.
One is the process of elite or specialist science diffusing to a broader population. |
The other general meaning of popularization is the change amongst the population and in public culture which makes science of use or of interest. |
That is one way of looking at science popularization may be from the top down, and the other from the bottom up. This dichotomy is well captured in Rajasthan State.
